What people are saying about Queer Kid Stuff!
Why should I talk to my kids about LGBTQ+ stuff?
We get it. Most of us grew up without access to LGBTQ+ people and stories so bringing these conversations to today’s young people might seem daunting, scary, and even strange. But that’s why we’re here, to help you understand why it’s important and navigate these conversations so you can raise amazing allies and affirmed queer & trans kids when you don’t have the time, resources, or know-how!
Here are some answers to your Frequently Asked Questions to get you started!
-
The short answer is it’s never too early to introduce LGBTQ+ topics to your children. Any later is too late.
The long answer is that preschoolers in particular are at the age when we begin to develop our sense of self and our identities in relation to the world around us. The American Academy of Pediatrics has found that most children have a solid understanding of their gender identity by the age of four! Lindz talks all about this in their book Rainbow Parenting: Your Guide to Raising Queer Kids and Their Allies!

First, take a biiiiiig deep breath! There you go, that’s better.
Second, everything is going to be okay, I promise! The fact that your kid (or a kid in your life) came out to you means that they trusted you with something incredibly important to them and that’s really really big. It takes a lot of courage to come out!
Third, the most important thing you can do right now is love, trust, validate, and support your kid. Don’t ask them to educate you or put your emotional baggage and biases onto them. Do the work to educate yourself and find support systems for yourself as you work through biases.Be patient with yourself, love your kid, and do the work. You’re already on the right path, you’ve got this!

You can, of course, always access the videos from the original Queer Kid Stuff webseries! We’re working on a more robust list of resources, but in the meantime you can check out our recommended book lists over on Bookshop.org!
